About Denise
Denise Bickford (they/them/theirs) grew up in a small town in Mid-Coast Maine. As a teenager, they attended the same high school at which Stephen King taught in the 1970s. Unlike Stephen King, Denise decided that their favorite writing form was poetry, and started writing poetry diligently in their early teens. They attended The University of Maine at Orono, where they worked with many great writers teaching at the university — including Jennifer Moxley.
Moxley was the one who pushed Denise to pursue a career in poetry after they graduated from the University of Maine. Professor Moxley was also the one who ultimately swayed their decision to attend Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. There, Denise worked with former Ahsahta Press editor Janet Holmes, poet and artist Martin Corless-Smith, and poet Kerri Webster. In 2016, Denise graduated from Boise State with their MFA in Creative Writing. They have one published chapbook, and their poetry has been featured in several literary journals.
After graduating from Boise State University, Denise moved to Bend, Oregon. There, they worked as both a freelance writer and a technical advisor for a major phone manufacturer. It was there that Denise began to appreciate the intersection between technology and writing. In 2017, Denise left their technical advisory job at the phone manufacturer to pursue full-time copy writing services. In 2019, Denise was featured on a billboard in UpWork’s top-rated freelancer campaign in Times Square, New York. Denise has remained a top-rated Freelancer on UpWork’s platform, and has many of their own clients with whom they work long-term. Denise has worked on content and social media campaigns for the auto industry, travel bloggers, fintech companies, blockchain startups, educational organizations, and more. Currently, Denise lives in South Texas in the Rio Grande Valley.
